Mena Dragonfly (Vancouver, BC)
I met Melanie at my first big-girl job (outside of academia). Back then, she was the project manager, and I was getting my feet wet in the world of web development. Nowadays, I'm working as a project manager, and she's making beautiful pottery. I don't think either of us would have predicted this, but I think it's safe to say we're both quite pleased with our respective changes in career path.
Even back when Melanie and I worked together, her true love (after her husband and two incredibly cute dachshunds) was pottery. She spent tons of time working in (and managing) the studio she used, and even taught some pottery classes. She loves it so much, that I couldn't be happier to see her now doing this as her full time gig.
Her specialties these days are: bowls, mugs, and vases with brightly coloured dots at the bottom; white vases, mugs, and pitchers with her signature hand sculpted dragonflies; and "wobbly" shotglasses.
What is a wobbly shotglass? Witness:
I Heart Crafts Winter Bazaar
I Heart Crafts is having their Winter Bazaar TOMORROW, Sunday Nov. 30 at the Ukrainian Cultural Center, 805 East Pender St. Vancouver. They've got a whole bunch of great local crafters and artists who will be selling awesome, funky, locally made goodies. (Details on vendors here.)
$2 at the door, and there will be a fundraising raffle for Out in Schools. Raffle prizes include baskets filled with hand made items donated by I Heart Crafts vendors.
If you're gonna buy Christmas presents, buy locally made and keep your hard earned dollars circulating to your crafty neighbours!

Blue Lantern Studio Open House
Artist Robi from Blue Lantern Studio sent me a message about her upcoming studio open house. If your looking to buy some lovely art from a local artist, please go drop by! Here are the details:
I'm a Vancouver artist (born and raised!) encouraging people to buy locally-made gifts this year for Christmas. DIY is great for those who are inclined, but not everyone is handy with a pair of scissors! I'm hosting an open house at my studio on Sunday, December 7th from 1-4 pm where I'll be selling hand-made greeting cards, beautiful artwork, and printed 2009 calendars and Christmas and New Year's cards.
My storefront studio is at 1218 East Pender Street (between Vernon and Clark). My website is www.blue-lantern.ca/studio.
